  • AP Scholar with Distinction
  • The requirements are that you must have an average score of at least 3.5 across all AP exams taken, a score of 3 or more on every exam, and 5 or more exams taken.
  • I took 9 AP classes in high school, studying and putting in work to succeed not only on the AP exams but also in the highly rigorous classes themselves. I challenged myself consistently each year after my freshman year by taking three AP classes each year, and I worked hard to learn the content and succeed in each class
  • AFJROTC Superior Performance Award
  • This award is presented to cadets who exhibit sustained, superior performance, and show outstanding character. Four cadets out of about 180 are given the award every year, and they are chosen by the unit's head (Aerospace Science Instructor). As a first-year student in JROTC, I participated in as many volunteering events as possible, tried out for several teams, and got onto them, allowing me to contribute to the unit; I also won a monthly Best Drilled Individual (BDI) competition. As a sophomore, I took on leadership roles, such as that of the Awareness Presentation Team Non-Commissioned Officer.

Activities

  • Life Science Luminaries/ Boz Institute Metagenomics/ Microbio
  • I co-founded the Life Science Luminaries Initiative with the Boz Life Science Research and Teaching Institute to give high schoolers life science research opportunities. I led my school's Boz interns and metagenomics and microbiology projects focused on isolating and characterizing microorganisms and presenting results in symposium settings.
  • AFJROTC Awareness Presentation Team (APT)
  • APT is a group of public speakers who work to create engaging, interactive presentations and other projects for JROTC on vital topics like mental health, bullying, cybersecurity, and more to raise awareness amongst elementary and middle schoolers.
  • Falcon Peer Mentoring (FPM)
  • FPM is an organization where qualified upperclassmen are trained to mentor underclassmen who may be struggling academically or socially at school. Mentors work with mentees twice weekly to create academic plans, develop habits of success, and more.
  • Teach For Speech Nonprofit San Diego Chapter
  • Teach For Speech is a nonprofit dedicated to empowering youth through the art of public speaking. The organization seeks to provide kids with confidence, a voice, and experience in the foundational but often feared skill of public speaking.
  • Kitty Hawk Air Society
  • Kitty Hawk is a national AFJROTC honor society that recognizes military and academic achievement. The organization is made up of tutors who serve fellow cadets through peer tutoring in various subjects and creating educational tools and events.
  • Science Olympiad
  • In my first year, I competed in Disease Detectives, Anatomy & Physiology, and Flight at regionals. My partner and I placed in Disease Detectives at 6th place. I also competed in the Agricultural Science event at the state competition and placed 10th. This year, I am competing in Disease Detectives, Ecology, Code Busters, and Experimental Design.
  • AFJROTC Flag Detail
  • Flag Detail is an AFJROTC drill team that is responsible for the raising (reveille) and lowering (retreat) of the school's U.S. and California flags. The team also has the responsibility of ceremonially raising and lowering the flag for events.
  • AFJROTC Public Affairs (PA)
  • As a member of PA, I was responsible for taking pictures and videos at events using the unit DSLR camera, which I learned how to use. I also wrote articles for the unit newsletter about events and our corps' teams on a monthly basis.
  • Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)
  • After an application/interview process by my local rotary club, I was chosen to attend RYLA, a 3-day event in which I was able to participate in team-building activities, make deep and meaningful connections with other peers, and learn valuable lessons from impressive guest speakers.
  • UCSD TritonHacks Hackathon
  • With no coding experience, I first competed in search of a new challenging experience. The second time, I applied my environmental science knowledge to create an educational simulation for which my partner and I won 'Best Presentation'. This inspired me to take AP Comp Sci A so I could learn more about computer science and gain technical skills.
