During my high school years I conducted a homeless feeding activity for my local church.
This consisted of 11 consecutive months in which I attended my local church in order to serve around 12-20 people in need. We fed them as well as taught them to go thru the teachings of jesus in order to overcome themselves and the situations they were currently in.
This was truly a life changing experience in which I had the opportunity of engaging with people out of my regular social bubble, and really looking face to face into the struggles of life that some misfortunate people need to face. This opened my mind as well into understanding that I am a privileged being and should be grateful for all the small things that happen in my life to which most people my age don't pay attention at all.
Also during my school years me and a group of 6 students directed two different tournaments/sports driven activities.
The first one was a institutional soccer tournament we named "Mundialito de Futból"(Mini Worldcup) in which we charged ₡1500(~$3) to everyone that wanted to participate. Being able to gather around 60 students. The logistic this tournament had was different classes varying from 6th to 11th grade playing against each other, which as a secondary effect also helped in engaging the socialization and strengthening the relationship between the students that formed part of this activity.
Once the activity ended we donated all profits to a public school which needed the money in order to remodel the school's facades. Granting also benefit to kids in need, since in Costa Rica public school's infrastructure is a big problem when it comes to granting education.
The second activity I held during my last school year was a bike competition named "La Ruta del Conquistador" (Conquerors Route). This project was accomplished by me and 9 classmates of mine. For this activity we gathered students all the way from 1st grade (Elementary School) all the way to 11th grade (High School). We divided the the activity into different categories, each of them having a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. For this project we went the extra mile to the point in which we gathered different sponsors. Which presented their products inside this activity, all of that in order to give it a more professional look. We charged ₡2000(~$4) and all profits from this activity were donated to the TECHO organization which helps fighting against poverty all around Latin America and the Caribbean.
